Matthew, who will celebrate his 29th birthday this weekend, is enjoying a fine run on the world circuit, battling back from shoulder injury to stand fifth in the world rankings.
However, he had to dig deep to reach the final, surviving a 90-minute marathon against No 3 seed Mohd Azlan Iskandar before beating World No.12 James Willstrop to win gold. Willstrop was making his international comeback after undergoing ankle surgery in April.
Meanwhile, Malaysia's World No 1 Nicol David lifted the gold medal in the women's event. David defeated Natalie Grinham in straight sets 11-6, 11-8 and 11-6 in another one-sided final lasting 38 minutes. It was the second win for Nicol after having won her first gold at the same meet four years ago in Duisburg, Germany.
Egyptian player Omneya Abdel Kawy beat England's Alison Waters in five games to capture bronze.
